The Champion of Champion events started last weekend with the Triples being played on Saturday. Eight teams qualified for post section play.  Teams to reach the semi-finals were skipped by Alan Gillespie, David Webb, Daniel French and Blair Cowan.  In  these match ups Webb defeated Gillespie 10-2 and French accounted for Cowan 14-5. This set up a final between French and Webb.  Both sides played steady bowls in the early ends but gradually, through some accurate bowls from Brent Sinclair and French, they proved too strong and drew away to win the title 12-7.

On Sunday the Champion of Champion Pairs title was decided.  In the first round of post section play Gary Flewitt beat Kristin Gould 10-2 and Mark Jacombs won against Russell Dawe 10-2. Semi finals saw Flewitt over Jacombs in a last bowl thriller 7-6, while  Eddy Girdler won a close game 8-7 with Mike Hollamby.

Flewitt made the best start in the final scoring a single on each of the first four ends. The fifth end was drawn and Girdler came back with a four on the sixth end to tie the scores at 4-4.  Flewitt then applied pressure through good positional bowls and Girdler in attempting to gain shots, killed the last three ends.  Final score, 13-4, to the Flewitt team.  This was Gary’s thirty second title and wife Lyn’s sixth.

The season draws to a close this weekend when the Champion of Champion Fours are played on Saturday and the Champion of Champion Singles Mens and Womens  are played on Sunday.

Report 12 August

The Otago representative team scored a well deserved win over the touring North Island team last Sunday.  The last time Otago had won the biennial match was 2001, but had drawn with the North Island 24 all in 2003.

Otago got the best possible start taking the first round by 12-4, winning six of the eight games.  North Island stormed back in the second round winning the four womens’ games and the mens pairs for a total of ten points.  Otago managed three wins to take their total to 18 points with North Island up to 14.  The third round was to prove tense, as the North teams took the early  lead in almost all games.  Otago needed to win at least four of the eight to be sure of the win.  Lyn Rance finished strongly to take the womens singles 16-6, while Daniel French showed coolness under pressure to win the mens singles 13-10, after scores were tied 10-10 with two ends to play.  Ross Garners triple had a comfortable win over Robert Lochries team 16-3.  This left Ray Webster to win his fours game. Some outstanding play from Stephen Gould and skip Ray, saw them notch up their third win of the day against a very good North team skipped by Kevin Childs, 6-5 and secure the win.  Ann Cottrell, Lynne Flewitt and Philippa Myers, secured a point with a draw in the womens triples.

Final scores were Otago 27 points  North Island 21points.  The tour concludes on Saturday 15th  August with the inter-island match in Christchurch for the Kevin Eddy Memorial trophy.  Otago will be represented in the South Island team by Marilyn Holmes womens singles and Daniel French  mens fours.  Mark Jacombs is reserve.

The Wakari indoor bowling club won its first centre title since 1965 when David Webb and Ashley Pennell combined to win the Otago pairs last Sunday. For both players it was their first centre title.  The final was a replay of the Champion of Champion pairs final from last season when Ross Garner and Shelley Keene were the victors, this time however the tables were turned in favour of the Wakari pair.

In the semi finals Webb shot out to a 10 nil lead after three of the nine ends but had to withstand a strong comeback from Blair Cowan and June Pickles to take the game 11-10.

The other semi final saw Ross Garner and Shelley Keene narrowly defeat Gary Flewitt and Ray Christensen 7-6.  Another good start in the final had Wakari leading 6-nil after three ends and 9-2 after six ends.  Garner could only score two singles and a two on the remaining three ends ruing missed opportunities to score more.  Webb and Pennell taking the game 9-6.

The Ladies Eights were played in Alexandra last  weekend .  Teams from Southland, North, Central, South Otago, Otago and South Canterbury competed for the title of Ladies Eights champion.

Otago had their hopes of winning the competition dashed in the opening round on Saturday when they lost both Fours games and then scored only seven points from the Singles and Pairs matches.  Southland made a flying start scoring 30 points and South Otago with 28 set an almost impossible task for the chasing teams. The Otago team was playing with little confidence and could only muster twenty one points in round 2 and nineteen in round 3 to finish Saturday with 47 points.  Southland continued to force the pace and led the competition Saturday night with 74 points, South Otago 67.5, South Canterbury 55.5.

Sunday morning saw a better start from Otago with a win to Shelley Keene’s Four and wins in the Pairs to Keene and Gawn.  Wins in the Singles to Keene, Cottrell,. Holmes, Rance and a draw to Ruthven had Otago scoring 21 points moving them to 4th equal place The final round  and Otago were playing with new found confidence. A win and a draw in the two Fours matches, three wins in the Pairs, and six wins in the Singles scoring 27 points. One wondered what might have been if the team had started as they finished.

Southland were deserved winners as they maintained momentum right through the tournament and were always in control.

Final scores Southland 123, South Canterbury 107.5, South Otago 96.5, Otago 95, North Otago 85, Central Otago 33.

The Trans-Tasman Test starts today in Broken Hill, NSW. New Zealand has won the last eight tests.  But the last test was drawn so the gap has closed and Australia will be motivated to stop the Kiwi’s run of success.

Keep up with the play on the N.Z Indoor Bowls website.
